Planned Parenthood recently contacted major pharmacy chains and asked them to explain their policies regarding birth control and its availability to all customers at all times. As you know, some pharmacists have refused to fill birth control prescriptions because of religious or moral reasons. Well, I'm morally opposed to killing, so I didn't join the fucking military, did I? Becoming a pharmacist isn't something you just "fall into," you know? It's not like you got an English degree and now you're a lawyer. This is like you went to pharmacy school - you knew what you were getting into. Anyway, Planned Parenthood has gotten responses from some pharmacies which they've posted on their Pharmacy Report Card. I am pleased to see CVS on here since that is where I do most of my pharmacy shopping, but pissed that Duane Reade hasn't said anything yet. So I guess that means I'm shopping at CVS. And writing letters to both places. Be sure to take a look at each company's response by scrolling over each name. All I can say is Go Price Chopper! For more background on this ridiculous infringement of our rights, check the Planned Parenthood of NYC background page. Love, Sisk

My letter to Mr. Jon Roberts of CVS:
June 12, 2005
Mr. Jon Roberts, R.Ph. Senior VP, Store Operations CVS Pharmacy One CVS Drive Woonsocket, RI 02895
Mr. Roberts,
I left you a voice mail message earlier today (June 12), but also wanted to take the time to write you a short note.
As I said in my message, because I live right between a Duane Reade and a CVS, and because there is a Duane Reade right next door to where I work, I generally divide my shopping time between those two places. However, having read the Planned Parenthood pharmacy scorecard, and your response to Planned Parenthood regarding CVS’s policy for filling birth control prescriptions, I have decided to shop solely at CVS from now on. I was so impressed by both the timeliness and directness of your response to Planned Parenthood, I feel this decision is a no-brainer.
Thanks for agreeing to uphold the professional duties required of a pharmacist and for not allowing religious and moral debate to cloud your company’s decisions which should be based on medical and scientific fact. I wholeheartedly support you and your company and you should consider me a loyal customer from now on.
Thanks again. Amanda Sisk New York

Finally wrote my letter to Duane Reade. I can't find a corporate address or e-mail, but if you go to the Duane Reade site you can send them an e-mail on their contact page. Here's what I wrote: To Whom It May Concern: I live in New York City and have always been a loyal Duane Reade shopper. I have shopped at Duane Reade because there is one near my home and next door to my work and because I have always found that it is stocked better than most other pharmacists nearby. I was very upset when I learned that Duane Reade has not yet responded to Planned Parenthood's repeated request for your company's birth control policy. Whether or not pharmacists in your store are required to maintain their professional code of ethics over their personal beliefs is a very important issue. The thought that a woman could be denied the right to have her prescription filled in a timely manner by the pharmacist on duty in your store is abhorrent. Therefore, though it may be a slight inconvenience to me, I will no longer be shopping at Duane Reade until I feel your company has responded to Planned Parenthood's question in plain terms stating that its pharmacists will always be required to fill any birth control prescription regardless of their personal religious beliefs. I have also written a letter to Jon Roberts, Senior Vice President of Store Operations of CVS, Inc. to let him know that because of CVS's birth control policy I will be shopping there from now on. I urge you to make your policy on the fulfillment of birth control prescriptions and your availability of emergency contraceptives public. We women deserve to know where we will be served with respect and dignity when making our most personal choices. Sincerely, Amanda Sisk PS In addition, I would like to say that I would rather shop at a store whose policy I disagreed with than at one whose executives will not make their policies known in order to evade public debate. Please make your policy public!
