In yesterday's entry, "Why They're Protecting Tom DeLay", I suggested that DeLay wears a suit of impervious political armor.
I'd like to explore this theory further, and back it up with something concrete. Unlike most of my accomplished Blogcall colleagues, I'm more of an op/ed blogger than an investigative one. But if a direct criminal link between DeLay and the White House is to be discovered, the blogosphere is likely to be the way it sees the light of day.
Help me connect the dots. Any thoughts?
So here's what I think. I think the Republican machine is protecting Tom DeLay because DeLay is not the topmost rung of the scandal ladder. Take another look at the House of Scandal diagram: Oil money? The pharmaceutical industry? Enron? The RNC? Texas? DeLay is holding these strings, but they culminate between the fingers of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Thus is a glass bubble of political security placed over the greasy head of the House Majority Leader. True, the Republican Party expelled Trent Lott, but that's because he blew their cover with public racism. He was a liability. He offered the party nothing that was more useful than his blatant racism was damaging. The party prefers for its elected officials to limit their racism to their public policies, as opposed to their public remarks.
DeLay has managed to offend Americans who follow politics, but he still hasn't done anything so spectacular as expressing regret that the age of segregation has ended. He's been around for a long time, and he knows a lot. And he's vengeful and slimy and small. If Tom DeLay goes down, just maybe he takes Bush and Cheney with him.
