Who's seen it? Who loved it? If you didn't, I'm sorry, you're wrong. ;-)
There's a lot of talk on other mb's (notably imdb's) about whether or not this film should be called "groundbreaking." What do you guys think? I vote for groundbreaking, not on the ground of what the film looks like or the digital tricks with which it was made, but because it is the first ever completely faithful adaptation. For those of you who have experienced Frank Miller's Sin City graphic novels, you know that the translation is panel-for-panel, word-for-word accurate. Hollywood never does this, and everyone presumed that stories required rewriting in order to work for the big screen. Miller and Rodriguez proved everyone wrong; powerful original material stands, and tampering with perfection is probably not a good idea. (I say probably here because I have seen rewrites add to a movie's strength: Jurassic Park needed some serious edits, but then again, the source material for that is mediocre at best. Peter Jackson streamlined the Lord of the Rings books in a very effective way, making them better movies than they would have been had they remained letter-faithful to Tolkien's works.)

Haven't seen it, but just before I read your post I spoke with Corey, who really liked it, for many of the same reasons you did. I guess I'll have to check it out; I must confess that the tepid reviews gave me second thoughts. I never read the graphic novels, but I used to really like some of Frank Miller's other stuff.

Leander text messaged me at 5 in the morning apologizing for the lateness, but saying he had to tell me how incredible Sin City was. So I'm guessing it was pretty damn good. I'd like to see it.

And now that I know seeing Sin City is the way to see the new Revenge of the Sith trailer on the big screen, I don't even care if the movie's good or not.

Yeah, it's really cool! But then, I love movies that blend pulpy noir stories with creative violence and high art shooting styles. Sin City is sorta Tarantino Does Dick Tracy. I really recommend it, and I really super recommend the graphic novels. Frank Miller's Dark Knight stuff really pales in comparison. You can tell that he was doing Dark Knight for someone else, and that Sin City is HIS baby.
Hey, have you guys seen Melinda and Melinda? I read a NY review (Wall St. Journal) that really liked it, but the out of town reviews have been lukewarm. Is it worth seeing?
