As Governor of Texas, Bush executed 152 people, more than any other governor in the entire history of the United States. However, I must say, my impression was that the vast majority of his victims were black. My research shows this is actually not the case. In two terms as governor, Bush executed 78 whites, 50 blacks, 22 Hispanics, one Asian, and one Samoan. The racist element seems more evident in the race of the people these inmates are alleged to have killed. The Death Penalty Information Center noted that "83% of capital cases involve white victims, even though only 50% of murder victims are white." Here is a list of the 152 people excuted in Texas during Bush's two terms as governor. Here are statistics, mug shots, police reports, and the final statements of those executed.

Long ago, I canceled my subscription to the Houston Chronicle and stopped watching local TV news -- those actions coincided, understandably enough, with the exit of Ann Richards and the long dark days of Shrub's reign. (And, with his toady in Austin, things haven't changed much since he moved to Washington.)
Being stuck in this place is bad enough without weekly front page coverage and lead stories of the latest victim. Every time they announce another state-sanctioned murder, I feel guilty ... I am as responsible for those deaths as any other citizen who allows it to keep happening.
Just as we are all, to some degree, responsible for every death in Iraq. Here we sit, ranting about how wrong it all is, and yet our government, supposedly elected by us, continue to butcher people around the world.
Can we go on letting them make us murderers? Can we allow anyone to blindly destroy the world in our name?
Good heavens, I think I'm inciting insurrection here ... me, a card carrying pacifist from 'way back. See what Texas can do to ya? Katie
