In a recent post on the FairTax thread, Sgt. E wrote: So today's question is: Are there any products, services, or specific companies which you avoid supporting for political or ethical reasons? Which ones, and why? Are there companies which you feel would be more extensively boycotted if people knew more about them?

At one time, I called for a boycott of Warner Bros. on my website after they declined to release a DVD simply due to a fear of political backlash. And I don't frequent Wal Mart because of their employee, contractor, and import practices (not to mention the injury incurred by my daughter in one of their stores). I do try to take my business to non-partisan or democratic supporters ... check out www.choosetheblue.com/main.php for a comprehensive list of corporate donations. Katie

Yes - I boycott Wal-Mart primarily because of their unfair treatment of workers and their aggressive anti-union policies. There was a local pie shop in Dayton that provided delicious fare at reasonable prices. The shop had operated since I was a kid in the late '40s. The second or third generation who took over in the late '70s were affiliated with the Jericho Project, which sponsored some in-your-face anti-Choice obstructionist tactics at local women's reproductive health centers. The husband managed to get his mug and accompanying remarks in the news every time he got arrested for obnoxious interference with clients. We wrote letters and networked with activists to try to hurt their pie sales. After about 10-12 years, our little boycott must have had an effect - 'cuz the nut-fundies sold the business to more open-minded entrepreneurs. We never tried this - but it occurred to me that a point could be made with a bit of street theater. The brainstorm was to wave signs and banners and chant over-the-top slogans in front of the pie shop - calling for a ban on pastries! For example, "Sugar and Shortening Are POISON!"; or "GLUTTONY is a DEADLY SIN!"

8-)We never tried this - but it occurred to me that a point could be made with a bit of street theater. The brainstorm was to wave signs and banners and chant over-the-top slogans in front of the pie shop - calling for a ban on pastries! For example, "Sugar and Shortening Are POISON!"; or "GLUTTONY is a DEADLY SIN!" Hilarious. I really like this idea. I have a dream - I'm working on it, but there are a lot of details to work out. I want to stand in front of Macy's in a really nice old 50's style dress, gloves, impeccable makeup and an apron and somehow anally electrocute and skin an "animal" under a sign that says "Furs Made - While U Wait!" I'm trying to figure out how to create some sort of animal that will bleed and be really, really gross. Then I have to figure out how (and where) to do it without getting arrested or taken off the street immediately. At the end, I would like to be smiling and covered in blood with "animal" guts all over me. Any ideas, anyone? Amanda

Amanda, are you wanted by the feds? I have to confess that was a little disturbing, even for someone who um I think loves( I hope I'm not overstating) animals enough to protest passionately. It seems like you may have a bit of a anger issue. Don't get me wrong, your blood lust is inspiring, but I think your dream/kill fest is a little out there.

Marie - I'm glad you find it disturbing. I would worry a lot about anyone who didn't. It's disgusting and awful. It's gross. Why would ANYONE want to do that? That's my point, or at least the point I would hope to make. That fur is not beautiful and there is no separation between a coat and what happens to that animal. It's a bloody, grotesque business. If no one thought it was gross, I'd probably think I hadn't done it right. Glad you're here. Going now to snoop around your other comments... A
